Victorian rally driver, Brendan Reeves, will compete in his first gravel rally on home soil this year when he tackles Rally Australia, round 10 of the World Rally Championship (WRC) in Coffs Harbour next week.
Reeves, who turned 23 this week, has been competing in Europe this year in the WRC Academy Cup, a six-round series aimed at finding the world’s best young drivers under 24.
With four rounds completed, Reeves and his co-driving sister, Rhianon Smyth, sit in third place overall in the one-make Series.
After six weeks in Europe on their most recent trip, in which they competed in two WRC Academy rounds and a tarmac rally in Belgium, the young Australians have returned home and are looking forward to competing in Australia’s show-piece event.
“I’ve never competed in Rally Australia before, so to compete on our home soil amongst the world’s best drivers will be an awesome experience,” Reeves said.
Whilst the car Reeves drives in the WRC Academy is fully-funded thanks to him being one of six winners of the 2010 Pirelli Star Driver Award, the cost of competing in six European rounds comes at a huge expense. Smyth came up with the idea for a Brendan Reeves Supporters Club earlier in the year, and the Club is now the pair’s largest sponsor.
Reeves will drive his own left hand drive Subaru Impreza in the Coffs Harbour-based event and the Supporters Club will feature heavily on the car’s livery.
“The support we’ve had from rally fans and small businesses all over Australia has been fantastic,” Reeves said. “Rally Australia will be a great opportunity for us to show our thanks to all our supporters and for them to watch us competing in Australia.”
“Those who want to really feel part of the action can have their name on our Rally Australia car with a donation from as little as $50,” he added.
Rally Australia starts in Coffs Harbour on Thursday, September 8 with a Super Special Stage around the Coffs Harbour jetty commencing at 7pm. Competitors will then face three full days of competitive stages on the shire and forestry roads around the Coffs Coast region before the winner is declared late on Sunday afternoon.
